Our Endoscopy team is proud to offer diagnostic, screening, and surveillance colonoscopy and upper endoscopy (EGD) procedures. Clinics are scheduled each month and can accommodate low-risk patients. High-risk patients will need to be referred to Alaska Native Medical Center for care.

We are passionate about providing safe and timely screening for our patients. We strive to offer the highest quality gastrointestinal endoscopy services for patients in our communities. By providing these services in Dillingham our patients can be seen close to home, and can avoid travel delays and extended stays in Anchorage.

We understand the importance of early screening and detection of colorectal cancer (CRC). Our goal is to decrease the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC) in our community. Our team focuses on increasing evidence-based interventions to improve CRC screening, including the use of patient and provider reminders, provider assessment and feedback, as well as reducing structural barriers and increasing the use of patient navigation services.

FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test) Kit

A FIT kit can be used as an alternative screening test for colorectal cancer. It’s a simple at-home stool test that is quick and easy. If you do not have a family history of colon cancer or polyps, and do not have any symptoms talk to your doctor to decide if a FIT kit is the best option for you.

What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is an exam used to detect changes or abnormalities in the large intestine (colon) and rectum. Before the doctor begins the procedure, you will receive a sedative and pain medication to ensure you are comfortable. During the colonoscopy, a long, flexible tube with a tiny video camera at the tip is inserted into the rectum. This allows the doctor to view the inside of the entire colon and, if needed, take a small sample of tissue (biopsy) through the tube to examine later. A colonoscopy usually lasts 30 minutes to an hour.

What is an EGD?

An upper endoscopy (EGD) is designed to examine the lining of the upper part of the digestive tract. This includes the esophagus, stomach, and the first portion of the small intestine. Beforehand, you will be given medicine to help you relax. Using a thin, flexible tube tipped with a light, the doctor views the images on a video monitor. This procedure is often performed to obtain a biopsy; determine the cause of persistent abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, and bleeding; detect inflammation, ulcers, and tumors; and treat conditions.

A colonoscopy can save your life and is the best test to screen for colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among Alaska Native people. It’s also one of the most preventable types of cancer through screening and early detection. For Alaska Native people it’s recommended that screening with a colonoscopy begin at age 40. Non-Alaska Native patients should begin screening and age 45. However, screening may need to start earlier for those with a first-degree relative diagnosed with colon cancer at a young age. You can expect to receive reminder letter or phone call when it's time for your colonoscopy.

Colorectal Cancer Symptoms

The following can be signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer:

• A change in bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation
• Abdominal pain
• Feeling bloated
• Bleeding from the rectum or blood in the stool
• Anemia
• Decreased appetite.
• Weakness and fatigue
• Weight loss
