September is Suicide Prevention Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Month.
This month, we take time to remember all lives lost to suicide, acknowledge those who have experienced suicidal thoughts, and support everyone who has been impacted by suicide.  It’s also a time to raise awareness about suicide, learn steps we can take in our own lives to prevent it, and share messages of hope to uplift one another.

What can you do to make a difference?
  • Participate in a free QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) class or MHFA (Mental Health First Aid) class to learn more about suicide and other mental illnesses/challenges that people in your community may be facing.
  • Learn, share, and practice healthy coping mechanisms.  See our Community Resources flyer to get more information.
  • Promote healthy connections and get support from others.  Consider attending the NAMI Family Support Group.
  • Review Suicide Warning Signs for Adults and Youth and read more about Five Action Steps To Help Someone Having Thoughts of Suicide.

For more information or to access materials to help reduce lethal means, such as a medication lock box, please call the BBAHC Behavioral Health Outpatient Department at (907) 842-1230.
