Whooping Cough Increasing in Alaska: Get Vaccinated Now!
Pertussis or "Whooping Cough" cases have increased markedly in Alaska this year, mirroring a nationwide trend. Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease spread through coughing and sneezing or through saliva. Symptoms can last for weeks to months and can be more severe for infants, especially those that are unvaccinated or infants whose mothers did not receive the Tdap vaccine during pregnancy. People of all ages need whooping cough vaccines. This includes young children, preteens, pregnant women, and adults who have never received Tdap. Pertussis remains one of the leading causes of vaccine-preventable deaths worldwide, so please be sure to get vaccinated right away!
