Medicare/Medicaid

Medicare:

Medicare is a Federal program that provides health insurance for older adults and some individuals with disabilities. Most become eligible for Medicare at age 65 or older, others may become eligible after two years of being on Social Security Disability (SSDI). Enrollment is through the Social Security Administration.

Medicaid:

The State of Alaska Department of Public Assistance (DPA) determines eligibility for DenaliCare/Denali KidCare also known as Medicaid. Medicaid provides medical coverage to low income Alaskans. Eligible groups include low income children, pregnant women, families, adults without dependent children between the ages of 19 and 64, the elderly, blind and permanently disabled. There is no time limit and many working families quality. Alaskans who are eligible for Medicaid can still get care from their Indian Health Services (IHS) provider and don’t have to pay premiums or co-payments. Medicaid can also pay for things such as travel, including air, lodging, meals and taxis. You benefit by having greater access to health care services. Tribes benefit because their health programs get more resources.
